How does the shape tracing game work?
Each shape's outline is shown as a light band with a thin dashed line along its middle. Trace along it in one stroke, without lifting, and let go when you reach the end; the trace is scored and the next shape appears. There are 3 shapes: a triangle, a zigzag and a star. Closed shapes can start anywhere; the zigzag starts at its dot.
How is your score calculated?
Two things are measured. Accuracy is the share of your line that stays inside the band. Coverage is the share of the band your line went along. Your score for a shape is accuracy times coverage, so you need both: tracing half the shape perfectly scores about 50%, and so does racing round the whole shape with half of your line outside the band. Your result is the average over the 3 shapes.
How wide is the band?
The band reaches 3.5% of the drawing's width either side of the outline, and what you see on screen is exactly what counts. All measurements are in the drawing's own units, so the game scores the same on a phone and a large monitor.
How to trace more accurately
- Slow down at corners. The star's sharp points are where lines most often leave the band.
- Look a little ahead. Watching the next stretch of the band, rather than your fingertip, keeps the line smooth.
- Finish the shape. Lifting early costs coverage, which counts as much as accuracy.
